Walk around Istanbul

Waying 18.03.2016 at 21:21

Community of travellers. Photoreports from different places of the world.

Some photos of the city, perfect for a weekend trip.

Photo 2. We arrived in Istanbul late on Friday evening, settled in the Galata district, and the next morning went for a walk on the European side of the city, exploring its sights.

the First of them is the famous Galata bridge, sheltering dozens of fish restaurants on the bottom floor every day and collects a crowd of fishermen on the second:

Photo 3. First went to the Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya) Patriarchal Orthodox Cathedral consecrated in 537 year(!), former the biggest Church in Christendom until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Subsequently, after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453 was attached to the Church ugly minarets and turned into a mosque:

Photo 4. In 1935, according to the decree of Ataturk, Hagia Sophia became a Museum, and with its unique frescoes and mosaics were cleaned off hiding their layers of plaster. I hope someday to once again revive the altar replacing the mihrab:

Photo 5. A fragment of an ancient fresco:

Photo 6. On the second floor of the Cathedral there is a window, offering an interesting view of the dome of the Blue mosque:

Photo 7. Blue mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque) the major mosque of Istanbul. Has six minarets: four, as usual, on the sides, and two slightly less high — at the outer corners. It is considered an outstanding example of Islamic and world architecture:

Photo 8. The architecture of the mosque combines two styles — classic Ottoman and Byzantine. The name "Blue mosque" the mosque received due to the huge number of white and blue etnickih ceramic handmade tiles that were used in the decoration of the interior:

Photo 9. After the magnificent frescoes of the Hagia Sophia, the Blue mosque decoration is not impressive:

Photo 10. View of the Galata district from the terrace of the Hamdi restaurant:

Photo 11. New Mosque and a piece of the eponymous square in front of it:

Photo 12. Ferries scurrying through the Strait and Bosphorus bridge in the background:

Photo 13. A last look at Hagia Sophia:

Need to be sure to return here for a more detailed study of the city...
