The Penultimate film of Ingmar Bergman talks about the era of silent film when one crazy genius came up with a way to make people on the screen talk.

"In the presence of the clown" (Larmar och gör sig till), Sweden - Italy - Norway - Germany - Denmark, 1997; dir. Ingmar Bergman starring: Berge, Ahlstedt, Marie Lee Richardson, head of Josefson, Peter Stormare, Anita björk, Pernilla August, Gunnel Fred, Anna Bjork, Inga Landre, Birgitta Pettersson.

In October 1925, the year engineer Carl Okerblom, a keen interest in the fate of the composer Franz Schubert, is found in the mental hospital with Professor Oswald Vogler, reading the book about the Countess Mizzi. Soon, the friends bring together their favorite characters, take off the world's first "alive talking film" and go with him on tour around the country...

Approaching the 80th anniversary, Ingmar Bergman decided to make a movie supposedly about my uncle Carl - a little sick, moderately funny and very inventive. He writes about it in his "Laterne magick", but there's no word on the film-drama "Child of joy" - why I will not undertake to say that retold here bike really was the place to be. He was probably talking about some kind of empowerment, allowing artistic liberties; I will not undertake to conduct additional historical research.

Much more important that "a vast mysterious world of shadows" in the dark, by some miracle occurs on the white screen. "Cinema is the greatest invention of mankind after the wheels," reminds us of Bergman, taking in those days when movies had their own voice. The idea of a crazy engineer seems to be simple: during a session of live actors voicing their characters. However, the difficulty is they have to go "on tour" with the only copy of my picture taking not only the audience's enthusiasm, but natural hardships of the journey (notice, by the way, note that their Billboard adorns the well-known portrait of Maria Lopukhina brilliant brush of Vladimir Borovikovsky).

unfortunately, the expectation that Bergman will amaze us now elaborate stylized ribbon-twenties is not justified: a film about Schubert presented here is disappointingly small number of frames. Incident fire breaks the show and the actors decide to continue to introduce the improvisational performance. So the author confronts two of his passions: cinema, directly dependent on the treacherously the supply of equipment and the theater, which will be alive always alive as long as man himself.

however, "In the presence of a clown" (the second name of the painting - "Clown, upon the stage") for art ("art has no laws. In art everything is dangerous"), but the approach of death. Appeared to engineer a clown is a clown - but really, how can we understand the reaction of Charles, a new incarnation bored all ladies with a scythe. Thus, forty years after his greatest, perhaps, of a masterpiece, Ingmar Bergman introduced the world to another memorable image of Death in the flesh (although not so original, mindful of "It" by Stephen king).

The sad comparison: it is clear that this film - the creature is already quite an elderly man; big, of course, master but whose best work was far behind. Not here, of course, those naive mistakes of youth, about which we have spoken, saying, the real Bergman is yet to come. But there is no great epiphanies, through which we have loved many of his tapes. To this picture are, of course, respect the laws of courtesy, in principle, make you to be respectful to other people's old age.

And in this respect better perhaps, not to know that in addition to the much older the Head of Josephson here play Inga Landre young Nelly of the debut bergmanesque "Crisis" (she also played the wife of a knight in the "the Seventh seal", and here appears as a old woman ticket collector) and Birgitta Pettersson, an innocent child of "the Maiden source" (she also appeared in "Face," and here plays the spectator Hannah). Leaving the world of cinema (he at that time did not know what time to shoot another film), Bergman seemed to be specially takes with him the images of his youth that was captured by him on film many decades ago...
